It's important to care for your awning to keep it functioning properly for years. Here are several steps to preparing your awning for the cold winter months so it's ready to go again in the spring.
Be sure your awning is free of dirt, leaves and other debris before storing it for the winter. Brush off everything you can and then use a hose, gentle soap and a soft brush to remove stuck debris and clean stubborn spots.
2. Dry Completely
After you've cleaned and rinsed your awning be sure you let it dry completely before folding and storing. Storing a damp awning can lead to mold and mildew.
3. Store the Valance
If your awning has a valance, remove it properly and then follow the same steps to clean it by removing debris and using soap on any stains. Allow to dry completely before folding and storing in a safe place.
4. Retract or Store Safely
Retract the awning completely and tie it safely for the winter. If you don't have a retractable awning, remove it from the frame and fold and store it in a clean, dry area.
5. Use a Cover
If your awning came with a winter cover, attach it according to the directions. If not, find a way to store it out of the elements.
